The Name — Wooden Bird

We found the wooden bird that gave our company its name and its logo in a small thrift store in Warwick, New York. It is very much as you see it here — a small bird’s body carved from a single piece of wood, a little pedestal for feet, the carving marks still visible on the body. The work is subtractive: you carve, and keep carving, until the figure that was always in the wood comes free. Michelangelo said it of marble, carvers know it of wood, and artists practice it every day: the material decides as much as the hands do.

It is the work that moves us. Not reviews or awards, not fame or glory, not even the admiration of colleagues — all good things, and welcome ones, but what gets us out of bed in the morning is the daily carving, chiseling, shaping of the piece until it becomes what it wants to be. And when it sings — not in the wood, but in us — we know: you will hear it too.
